Fun little edit I shot with Luke McGillewie when we were in Zanzibar. Huge thanks to the awesome crew from Aquaholics who made this trip so much fun.
Zanzibar – Kitesurfing & Bikinis
I recently spent some time in Zanzibar shooting kitesurfing and bikinis from the new Bacon Bikinis range. Zanzibar is such a beautiful island with so much culture. I stayed with the awesome people from Aquaholics. They have an awesome setup right on the beach in Paje in addition to accommodation. From the awesome Maasai people, to the incredible sunrise and also the beautiful backdrops – I loved this trip.
Zanzibar Kitesurfing & Bikinis
Namibia is definitely one of my favorite countries. It’s other-worldly. This trip was very unexpected – when the swell hits – the husband makes plans! I mainly filmed this trip (still editing) – but I did grab a couple of shots (keep scrolling). Above is an edit of some of the wipeouts on this notorious wave. I would never have the balls to paddle out there.
Huge thanks to the amazing Lombards for hosting us.
Bacon Bikinis Shoot
As a photographer. It’s always a breath of fresh air to shoot something creative for yourself. No pressure on the outcome – just a creative outlet. I did a shoot with the gorgeous Candice Bacon and her Bacon Bikinis. I wanted to incorporate a surfboard so I borrowed my husbands Hypto Kryto.
Moon Patrol – Kiteboard with Luke McGillewie
Last week I spent some time shooting with Luke McGillewie. After long day shooting around Cape Town – we ended off the day with a random water session filming the new Liquid Force Moon Patrol kiteboard at Big Bay.
Portugal – Kiteboarding and Surfing trip
We spent a month in Portugal with Ponto Radical Portugal helping them set up a kite school and putting together an edit about kiteboarding in Portugal. We were lucky to have some great surfing conditions so when there was no wind we travelled to a couple of surf spots. We also travelled up to Nazare. Although it wasn’t breaking – you could still feel the incredible power of the waves tanking at the lighthouse. Here is a photo diary from our trip.
Asher Sports Photography – Kiteboarding trip to Portugal
Kiteboarding in Portugal
To say we fell in love with Portugal is a bit of an understatement. We went for 12 days and ended up staying a month with the crew from Ponto Radical Portugal. Beautiful landscapes, the incredible city of Lisbon (filled with so many beautiful buildings and so much history), oh and don’t even get me started on the pastries… Pastel de nata’s became our daily breakfast. Escaping the Cape Town winter was definitely a treat, with night only falling around 10pm, the guys were kiting late into the evenings. We regularly only had dinner after 11pm. The food is AMAZING: especially the seafood. I fell in love with squid ink pasta (felt like I was in an episode of Masterchef). I was lucky enough to shoot with Kyle Cabano and Erik Volpe. I also put myself far out of my comfort zone by doing a short film about our trip. A huge new challenge which I loved!
The lagoons are idyllic with incredible backgrounds that are a photographers dream. The water is a beautiful blue and clam diggers are bent double filling up giant sacks of clams (a very funny sight when you first see it). Everywhere around these lagoons, cellphones are whipped out to take snaps of the guys kiting and doing tricks.
I’m a city girl at heart (I grew up on a farm and lived for the days we went into town). Lisbon, was love at first sight. Especially the Fartura’s! During one of the festivals we had 2 in one evening!
The trams glide past you in the streets and washing hangs from every second window along the walls. People sit along the streets at restaurants smoking and eating. Waiters stand outside trying to entice you in. We spent a lot of time along the harbour and in the old part of Lisbon. Streets are so narrow you can touch the walls if you lower the car windows. The Euro soccer was happening in France at the time and we were lucky to catch a few of the Portugal games in Lisbon. It reminded me of the World Cup here a few years ago. The atmosphere was alive with the fans excitement. During one of the last games we saw, I was shooting some time lapses outside the pubs when they won and a huge roar went up. Car horns were blaring and people were running around with the Portugal flag.
I’m definitely heading back next year…
Asher Sports Photography – Sunset kitesurfing photo-shoot
Kitesurfing photo-shoot at sunset
Sunset really is the golden hour. I don’t think anyone can ignore a beautiful sunset. There’s a kind of magic that happens when the sun is setting over the ocean. The light turns the water and waves into liquid gold. This past summer I collaborated with Naish kitesurfers Jalou Langeree, Kevin Langeree and Carl Ferreira for The Kite Mag. The concept behind ‘The Shoot’ was to provide a bit of insight into how we captured the images. We were extremely lucky with an amazing sunset and waves for this photo-shoot. The light during this session was unbelievable – combined with some serious shredding.
